To the North of the Daytona Beach area you'll find the more quiet Ormond Beach. Driving on the beach is prohibited at the northern end of the beach. Daytona Beach has been attracting vacationers since the late 1800s. The land was first discovered by wealthy tycoons from the north looking to invest in good land. The first hotel, the Palmetto House, was added to the scene in 1874. It became a trend to help build up Daytona, with community centers and golf courses well along the way. Vacationers have been flocking to the Daytona Beach area for more than a century. During the late 1800s, the area caught the attention and imagination of many wealthy northern tycoons who found the land favorable for investment. One such mogul, Mathias Day, founding father of what was then called Daytona, built the first hotel, the Palmetto House, in 1874.
